My first band,
We weren’t bad
We were not trying to reinvent the wheel
We just wanted to make music
That was fun to dance to
At parties in basements, in garages
That was fun to dance to
And we called ourselves the Mediocre Gatsby
And we had our own theme song
And it went just like this:
The Mediocre Gatsby is coming to your town
That’s right!
The Mediocre Gatsby is living in your home town!
That’s how our theme song went!
And my next band, we were called
Chatty Cathy Cathcart and the Catheter Catharsis
We were pretty good
We played around
We played some parties
And in the the Clown Lounge
And people danced and they cheered
In the Clown Lounge it felt weird
(in a good way)
But Chatty Cathy Cathcart and the Catheter Catharsis
Had to die, just like all bands must die
Like Fixed Gears are for Jerks and Lesbians
The ‘Mats and Hüsker Dü and Prince too
And The Blue Up? And Steel Shank
And Velma and Chromaphase
And The Spectors (and Trip Shakespeare)
And The Hang Ups (and Rex Daisy)
And The Wonsers
Now!
It is time, to repeat the theme song, of my first band:
The Mediocre Gatsby is coming to your town
That’s right!
The Mediocre Gatsby is living in your home town!
Mediocre Gatsby!

Y'uns were on your way to church
Y'uns were on your way to work
When I saw you last
Drunk downright disorderly
Oh you say you have to pass
You wanna see why they don't smile
What makes their way the best
Searching looking all around
Still you come up with nothing
You got Quakers and Shakers and Puritans
Catholics and cowlicks, Unsure-itans
And I know that I'll see you at the next revival
You say that it's part of your survival
blah blah blah
Y'uns were on your way to church
When I saw you last
Drunk downright disorderly
With a smile on your face
Said you wanna see why they don't smile
What makes their way the best
I shrug my shoulders, oh I don't know why
well I guess I gotta go
You got Quakers and Shakers and Puritans
Catholics and cowlicks, Unsure-itans
And I know that I'll see you at the next revival
You say that it's part of your survival
Y'uns were in a family way
and you say that it's the best

Are you feeling modern?
Are you feeling gay?
Will you be here tomorrow?
Are you here today?
‘Cause if you are modern
You could float away any day.
Are you feeling modern?

She's no stranger to the blade
and she says that her mind is made up
And she blames it on the churlish knave
who gave her her fate

I was a monster
You were a caveman
We made a scene
On the dance floor pretty darlin'
It was Halloween
I'd never seen ya
Make yourself
So available
The look in your eyes
It was spooky
You called me bra
I called you bra-strap
We had a chuckle
High fives fist bumps flyin'
I think that you broke my knuckle
If one more guy says
He finds me
strangely attractive
I'm gonna kick in the nuts
I made up my mind
to keep my mouth shut
We were dancin' and drinkin'
And thinkin' we had it made
It was your party and everyone left
Even the DJ abdicated
Yeah, he split...

The Devil's Music

Humanity is wrong
I could write a whole song
But no, I ain't gonna write it
Because lightening, yes the flame,
Fire is her name
She's the only thing
That gets me excited.
Fire, like an old flame
And when I get to Hell,
I hope I get my own cell
Well I'll sit and I'll stare into the fire
Yes I'll stare into the flame
Knowing I'm to blame
Well I made my bed and yes
I'll die in it.
Fire.
This is the devils music.

I wanna go down to St Petersburg
'Cause they changed their name and oh
so many of their ways-ay-ay-ays
You say that I am lost
You say that I merely go against the grain
Tell me what is wrong with that
If the grain is spoiled anyways-ay-ay-ays

deathbed, epitaph
time knows you’re a shadow
sweetly to sleep
the darkness comes in your dreams
and you are annulled
just as easily
as you were
conceived in hope that light might
cast a shadow
and so be seen
by the first light when last shining
and you are annulled
just as easily as you were
deceived by hope
what your shadow doesn’t know
won’t hurt you
deathbed, epitaph
time knows you’re a shadow

We used to kill the Communists
We used to try to stop the spread
No use in killing communists anymore
We'll buy their goods instead
We used to kill dictators
And tolerate a few
If it was in your interest
You'd serve a dictator too!
The Domino Effect has worn off
Manifest Destiny subsides
Still, a cold war is better than a bloody one
At least no one dies
Except for spies
But first we killed the Britons
And the Hessians that they hired
Then the Hessians got all nasty as Nazis
Once again we fired
We shot those Fockers down!
We never killed the Russians
They were always on our side
Now the Russians have their mafia
To keep the greedy in line
The greed is in kind
If you're making twenty cents
They only want a dime
Well!
If it's 50% of your revenues man,
It's not that much,
At least your alive!
