Poverty is the Enemy (a cappella version)

about

This is an a cappella version of "It's a Free Country," a track that will be on my next full-length album.

I recorded the first improv for this song on June 2, 2019, so it's been slow going, as you can see.

I am still learning a lot about recording myself at home, and this track is an example of the experimentation that goes on in the process.

I had exported a full rocking version (instruments and vox), and liked that verison, but I wanted just a bit more vocals. So I exported a vox-only version with the intent of bumping that on top of the previous version.

And then I listened to this a cappella version and thought it sounded kinda cool just like that, so here it is for you now, naked as the day it was born.

Also, I think I had a virus or something and my voice got super low for a few days (like I can hit a low D which is not normal for me), so that's why there's all that crazy low stuff going on in there.

lyrics

Poverty is the Enemy (a cappella) Lyrics

A wop bop a loo bop
Wop Bam Boom

It’s a free country
that’s what they say
It’s a free country
I’ve heard it said

Though you know they say
so many things
that look good on paper
but they don’t mean
much of anything

Like what does free even mean
if we ain’t all protected equally
under the law?

A wop bop a loo bop
Wop Bam Boom
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room
slavery and genocide
it’s our history
don’t try to hide
manifest destiny
growing pains
you and me
violence obsessed
fetishize getting undressed
the war machine complex
Ike warned us it was coming next
America what’s wrong with you
You forgot the golden rule
Do unto others as you would have others
Do unto you

It’s a free country
I heard it said
It’s a free thing
that’s what they say

Poverty is the enemy (poverty poverty)
Hate is the enemy (gotta hate haters)
Greed is the enemy (don’t blame the 80s)
War is the enemy (more on that later)
Ignorance is the enemy (don’t be an idiot)
Lies are the enemy (let’s try to be honest)
Fascists are the enemy (nattering nabobs)
Intolerance is the enemy (Try to understand)
Nazis are the enemy
Racists are the enemy

So, as you can see
if you’re living in a free country
and you’re trying to live up to those ideals
there’s going to be a lot of enemies
but really, in a free country
shouldn’t you be able to go skinny dipping?
shouldn’t you be able to just take off your clothes
jump in the lake and NOT go to jail?

Come on, let’s go skinny-dipping!
What do you say guys,
Let’s get naked!
