Down Baby Down! (In the Valley) Well I went down in the valley I was down in the canyon It's a big ol' coulee (Don't ya know it's a big ol' coulee) It's a big ol dam (Don't ya know it's a big ol' coulee) And I come out with a bum knee (Just the moon and the stars above me) I got down with a waitress I didn't see no planes in the sky (Just the moon and the stars above me) And I sang a song for the people there And they said: "Honestly, we don't care You can sing in your underwear!" Well I went down in the valley (Well I went down) When everything went wrong When the world turned upside-down And it's up to the Gretchen question to save us now Love your fellow man, Love your fellow man, Love your fellow girl even more Just show her all the love in the world Me and Tellus Mater Well I was down in the valley (Well I got baptized down by the riverside) And I was down on my knees And I was down on my knees And I stayed down on my knees And it's up to the Gretchen Question And it's up to the Gretchen Question And it's up to the Gretchen Question To save us now Where were you? In the valley

The angels they were singing Aged four From the top bunk to the floor Seemed like a thousand feet or more And I fell Hey Momma Mama O! Mother Mama realize I had a vision I thought I dreamt into your eyes And when I woke up I'd seen myself from the ceiling I thought I was dead I thought a lot of things but I was only dreaming And out the window There were angels And they were looking out for me Then they started to sing They sang "You're alive O! child Be free and do not die! Not right now" (Second Grade) High As a kite From the the playground slide And I thought to fly O Father Father DAD! I think I landed on my head You were so patient with me When I thought that I was Peter Pan Down by the riverside When I was face-first in the sand I felt your loving touch And Dad I think I got it (Gotta get it) Automatic I was not a boy Still I might not yet have been a man And then I felt your hand On my arm Outside my self I was a child again

Summer of hate (It's the summer of hate) Years and the seasons tend to bleed This Indian Summer It is based Not on want Not on need And I love the sun When it shines down on people in love Makes them warm And I love the sun But no This is no summer of love This is the summer of hate And hurt Hate My heart hurts so bad Hate Oh I don't want something for nothing I just want something for pain Pain And hurt Pain Oh my heart Maybe it's just me and I forgot To ride my bike down to hidden beach When it was so hot Look around have some fun Watch the sun shine down on people in love Make my hair wet Look around have some fun watch the sun Shining down on people in love Watch the sun going down on love But no This is no summer of love This is the summer of hate And hurt Hate My heart hurts so bad Hate Oh I don't want something for nothing I just want something for pain I'm not a glutton for nothing Certainly I've got my needs But baby don't hate me Don't be hate Don't be hate Don't be hate Don't be hate Baby, writing to say that I'm sorry now

You were down On your luck You were down on your knees More than anyone needs to be But you got up And you threw a punch in the air You said "I don't care I don't care I don't care I deny reality Any claim on me!" You woke up In a pool of blood and sweat Then you woke up for real it was only wet In your bed It was the color of colorlessness It was not red Come to think those sheets are Venus blue Well you think that blood is blue I've got news for you What's in your veins It's all the same as mine All the same All the same All the same All aboard for the ride of your life "Wouldn't it be nice?" When you were born It kind of just seemed like you stopped being dead And even this will end Have no fear For the love love love That brought you to the ground Though it seems so sad to be around Sometimes Sometimes!

It's 3 a.m at the Super America This big ol' slack-jawed sister Catching snowflakes on her tongue And just the day before At Ten-O-One Marquette I'd remarked on a fella from Madras Doin' the same Made a snowball and smiled at his friends They were in town for a convention They ran away on the bridge to nowhere Super America Even that'll go away Away like seven-eleven did When you were a kid (Either!) You looked up and they were gone (One day) somebody said "They're gone!" And They were gone (They were gone) They ran away on the bridge to nowhere You know man, the bridge What they did, they just ran Ahhhhh-ahhh-uhh-hah Caliban Coincidence The deformed slave The green satin box With golden thread Or just gold Sliding open sound Sounding simultaneous on the wisp Of thumb on page Abu Mazen, Life of Johnson Awake old man Grasping at the green box Gone now But for Nancy Savage beast Dream awake to riches Lost in the storm They're on the bridge to nowhere Too much livin' and not enough life Always had a pretty girl But you never took a wife Never signed that contract Though a ring was bought Now we fought and we fought And that ring came to naught Your whoreson malthorse drudge You ought to be ashamed of yourself You're on the bridge to Nowhere Ahhhhh-ahhh-uhh-hah

The end is nigh O! me oh my I got some shit to do before I die Such vanity What Vanity My greatest sin must be vanity Right behind maybe gluttony and say Baby, how about a little envy The good lord knows I can't be sin-free everyday Whoa and if you sin a lot Have no fear Saint Peter ain't going to make you pee in a cup When you show up At the pearly gates He'll hold up a mirror to your face and he'll say "Sir, repent!" Gluttony and Greed and Lust and Sloth and Wrath (Sinners repent!) Envy and Vanity My greatest sin must be vanity Right behind being sloth

(She whispers hot in my ear) It's fun and easy It's fun and easy It's fun and easy She never ever wanted to be anything other than A good person and your favorite lover and your best friend Well now I'm not counting but those are three things I only need one right now and that's love Let's rock Let's roll Well she can do the Watusi But she doesn't really know how to dance She just shakes a tail feather And does a little wave with her hands She whispers hot in my ear "You know I got good cookin' My mind is acute And I ain't bad looking to boot" Is that right? That can't be wrong? But what's not right Must be wrong But maybe we should change the rules For just this one song And dü the watüsi Dü the Watüsi Do the grind Now do it forward From behind I'm feeling lucid Now loosey-goosey Dü the Watüsi Dü the Watüsi Yes we will do it all night Ohh It's fun and easy She never ever wanted to be anything other than

I see your bird has flown How does it feel to be alone In a jail of your own fashioning With reason for the walls And despair for the ceiling? I lived in pissed off city For a long, long time The landlords they are greedy And the bums don't take no dimes In pissed off city Most the girls are pretty Most the boys are nice We can walk on water here When it turns to ice At least we got a family To justify the line "The scene is so incestuous" I hear that all the time In pissed off city Get yourself some money Find yourself a wife Escape from pissed off city to, uh The countryside We've all got our dreams And most of them are pipe Pass that over to the left And yes, I'll have some more wine In pissed off city I lived in pissed off city For a long long time When Hell freezes over I reckon I'll be doing fine I'll freeze there with the sinners For everything I've done 'Cause in pissed off city You gotta do what you can to have some fun Fun?

about

Have you ever done a job for someone, and then when it comes time to get paid, they say: "Hey, wouldn't you rather have this laptop (or motorcycle, or guitar, etc.) instead of the 400 bucks I owe ya?"

That's kind of how this record happened.

I was hired to be part of a team of drivers that was picking up J-Lo and her entourage at the Minneapolis airport. The pay was good, I did it on a sunny afternoon. (I was just in a decoy van to shake the Paparazzi, nothing too exciting. Miss Lopez wore a taupe velour sweatsuit, if you're curious.)

So when I went to get my 400 bucks after this gig, the owner of the limo company held aloft an old Mac iBook, and raised his brows quizzically— dare I say, enticingly.

Soon, I was in a closet in my Minneapolis apartment with a microphone, a snare drum, a guitar and a bass—hell-bent on learning to record myself on a laptop. This record is what I came up with.

Some songs were recorded right into the built-in microphone on the Mac with fingers veritably thrumming on dictionaries for percussion. That is why I choose lo-fi as a genre. (I'm genre agnostic at the end of the day.)

I had previously recorded on a Neve console with a Studer 2-inch 24-track tape machine with flying faders and the whole deal, so this setup was several steps down from that.

Could I make music that people might want to listen to on this janky little box? I procrastinated on releasing this record for a decade while I mulled that question over. And I started a family. And moved away from Minneapolis and the Midwest in general.

“My First Foray into Fireworks (and how I failed)” is my first full-length since 2008. This will be the first-ever Faux Jean release without some sort of physical object to sell or ship; I'm okay with that.

The album title is borrowed from an old journal entry I wrote about the great Duluth fireworks disaster of 1988.

And so, like a 3-year old proudly presenting you with a wild, hand-made collage, I say: “I did it all by myself.” Post production included bouncing digital files to analog tape at Mike Wisti's Albatross studios for added ghostliness and a pass through Audition under the careful eye of Todd Bowie.
